How to use this calculator
The calculator prices a full gutter replacement: old gutters off, new gutters and downspouts on, and guards if you want them.
- Gutter length. Walk the house and add up every roof edge that carries a gutter, in feet. Gable ends usually have none; a hip roof has gutters on all four sides. A 100-foot tape or a measuring wheel along the ground under the eaves gives the same number as the eaves themselves. Fixr and This Old House both price a typical home at about 200 linear feet.
- Gutter material. Installed price per linear foot from Fixr, materials and labor together. Sectional (seamed) gutters come in fixed lengths joined on site; seamless gutters are formed from a coil in one piece per run.
- Downspouts. Count the vertical pipes. The calculator prices them per downspout.
- Remove the old gutters. Leave this ticked for a replacement. Untick it for new construction or if the old gutters are already down.
- Gutter guards. Screens or covers over the gutter to keep leaves out, priced per foot.
- Your state. Adjusts the labor half of the estimate to local construction wages.

Today's Homeowner (September 2025) quotes narrower per-foot figures for 200 feet of box gutters: vinyl $6.64–$7, aluminum $8.91–$9.20, galvanized steel $9.79–$11.50 and copper $16.55–$32.95. Fixr's own overview table lists aluminum at $7–$13 without splitting seamed from seamless. The calculator uses Fixr's material pages because they separate the two.
Add-on costs

Fixr's pages disagree on removal: two of them give $0.65–$0.85 per foot and the overview gives $1.31–$2.38. The calculator spans both.
What drives the price
- Material and seams. Moving from sectional to seamless aluminum more than doubles the per-foot price at the low end ($6 to $14). Copper costs roughly four times as much per foot as sectional aluminum.
- Length. Every line except the downspouts scales with feet of gutter.
- Downspouts. Fixr's downspout guide recommends one for every 20 to 30 feet of gutter. A house that needs more than four will cost more than the default.
- Height. Fixr says a single-story home costs a few hundred dollars less than a two- or three-story home with the same system, mostly because of longer downspouts. Today's Homeowner adds that difficulty and risk rise with each story.
- Removal. A replacement carries the cost of taking the old system down. Fixr says gutter replacement typically runs several hundred dollars more than a new install.
- Labor rates. Today's Homeowner puts labor at 40–60% of a professionally installed gutter job, or $6–$9 per linear foot.
Cost breakdown
Installed gutters covers the gutter itself, hangers, end caps and corners, and the labor to hang it at the right slope. On seamless gutters the price includes forming the runs on site.
Downspouts covers the vertical pipe, elbows and fastening for each outlet. Fixr's copper page prices copper downspouts per foot ($13–$25 per foot to install on top of $12–$20 per foot for material), so for copper the per-downspout line is a floor, not a full price.
Removal covers taking down and hauling away the old gutters and downspouts.
Gutter guards covers the guard material and installation along the full length.
Not included: fascia repair behind the old gutters, underground drain lines, heat tape (Fixr: about $5 per foot for the material), and painting.
Prices by state and metro area
The state selector scales only the labor share of the estimate. Labor is taken as 50%, the midpoint of the 40–60% Today's Homeowner reports. The local factor is 0.5 + 0.5 × the state's construction wage index — the state's mean hourly wage for construction and extraction occupations divided by the national mean of $31.42 (BLS, May 2025).
For the default — 200 feet of seamless aluminum, four downspouts, old gutters removed — the national typical is $4,200:
| State | Wage index | Factor | Typical estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington | 1.26 | 1.13 | $4,750 |
| California | 1.20 | 1.10 | $4,600 |
| National | 1.00 | 1.00 | $4,200 |
| Texas | 0.84 | 0.92 | $3,850 |
| Mississippi | 0.78 | 0.89 | $3,750 |
The calculator also prices 387 metro areas from the same BLS survey. The default job comes to $4,200 nationally; in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA (wage index 1.18) it is $4,600, and in Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX (0.87) $3,950. Choose the metro area below your state for the closest figure.
Gutter and fascia replacement together
Gutters hang on the fascia board, so the two jobs overlap. If the fascia behind the old gutters is soft or stained, it has to be fixed before new gutters go up — fresh hangers will not hold in rotted wood. This Old House lists water damage to the fascia as one of the signs that gutters need replacing.
Price the fascia separately with the fascia and soffit replacement calculator and add the two results. With This Old House's figures, 200 feet of wood fascia with the old board removed adds roughly $2,000–$6,000. Doing both in one visit means the gutters come down once.
Signs you need new gutters
This Old House and Today's Homeowner list the same warning signs:
- sagging sections or gutters pulling away from the house;
- cracks, gaps or breaks between sections;
- rust or chipped paint on metal gutters;
- broken or disconnected downspouts;
- overflow outside heavy downpours, or water pooling against the foundation;
- water damage on the fascia behind the gutter.
A single bad joint or a loose hanger is a repair. Repeated failures along sectional gutters near the end of their lifespan point to replacement.
Seamless or sectional?
Sectional gutters cost less because they are assembled from pre-cut pieces. Seamless gutters cost more because a crew cuts them to length on site with specialized equipment, but each run has joints only at corners and outlets. This Old House notes that K-style gutters, thanks to their flat back, hold more than twice as much water as half-round gutters.
For a DIY job on a one-story house, sectional vinyl or aluminum is the realistic choice. Today's Homeowner calls hiring a professional "the best and safest choice", and notes that difficulty and danger rise with every story.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does gutter replacement cost in 2026?
Fixr's national average for gutter installation is $3,223, with most homes paying $2,320–$4,222 for about 200 linear feet. This Old House (October 2026) gives an average of $3,200 and a range of $600–$5,800 for a 2,000 sq ft home. With seamless aluminum, four downspouts and removal of the old gutters, this calculator's default comes to about $4,200.
How much more do seamless gutters cost than sectional?
Fixr prices seamed (sectional) aluminum gutters at $6–$11 per linear foot installed and seamless aluminum at $14–$20, because seamless runs are formed on site from a coil. Today's Homeowner puts whole-house totals at $1,300–$4,000 for sectional and $1,900–$5,000 for seamless. Seamless gutters have joints only at corners and downspouts, so there are fewer places to leak.
What does gutter and fascia replacement cost together?
Price them as two lines. For 200 feet of seamless aluminum gutters with four downspouts and removal, this calculator gives about $4,200. Replacing 200 feet of wood fascia behind them adds roughly $2,000–$6,000 using This Old House's figures: $1–$3 per foot for the board, $6–$20 for labor and $3–$7 to remove the old board. The gutters have to come down for fascia work anyway.
How much do copper gutters cost?
Fixr (January 2025) prices copper gutters at $26–$37 per linear foot installed for K-style, $27–$40 for half-round and $29–$40 for seamless. That makes 200 feet $5,200–$8,000 before downspouts and removal. Copper lasts 50 years or more according to both This Old House and Today's Homeowner, against about 20 years for galvanized steel.
How much do gutter guards cost?
Fixr's steel-gutter page prices installed gutter guards at $2.60–$18.50 per linear foot, so 200 feet costs $520–$3,700. Its seamless-gutter page puts guards added to existing gutters at $1,200–$2,000, and gutters with guards built in at $20–$40 per foot. Today's Homeowner gives $650 to over $4,000 for a whole system.
How many downspouts do I need?
Fixr's downspout guide says experts recommend one downspout for every 20 to 30 feet of gutter. Its steel-gutter page prices a typical job with four downspouts at $300–$600, or $75–$150 each, which is what this calculator uses. Vinyl downspouts run $20–$160 each installed. Two-story homes need longer downspouts, which Fixr says costs a few hundred dollars more.
How long do gutters last?
Today's Homeowner gives 20–40 years for aluminum, about 20 years for galvanized steel, 25 years or more for vinyl and 50 years or more for copper. This Old House is more cautious about plastic, at 10–20 years, and quotes up to 20 years for aluminum and steel in its FAQ while citing InterNACHI at 20–40 years for aluminum in the body.
